A Tribute to the Voices of El Toro's Past

On October 2, 2008, the Orange County Great Park paid tribute to those who shared and documented their El Toro life memories through the Great Park Oral History Program (a collaboration with California State University Fullerton's Center for Oral and Public History). More than 150 interviews have been completed.

A short sample of interviews is now available online. Watch the video (Windows Media Player required) or read about the speakers from the sample interviews.

The Center for Oral and Public History is still searching for narrators for the Oral History Project. They are especially interested in hearing from veterans and members of the community who were stationed at or lived near the base during World War II and the Korean War. If you have significant memories of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and would like to participate in the Oral History Project please call (714) 278-8415 or send your contact information to coph-eltoro@fullerton.edu. Orange County Great Park Meetings are broadcast live on scheduled meeting dates, and are replayed on Wednesdays at 8:00 am, Thursdays at 1:00 pm, and Fridays at 7:00 pm (unless noted otherwise). All broadcasts can be viewed on Cox Communications Local Access Channel 30. Recent meetings will air until the next meeting takes place. Archived meetings are also available online at www.ocgp.org and www.cityofirvine.org.

Preview Park & Balloon Hours

The Great Park Balloon relaunched on July 12, 2008 in celebration of the Great Park's Third Anniversary, the Festival of Flight, and the Grand Opening of the Preview Park. Below is an updated weekly flight schedule (including evenings):

Preview Park Hours
Thursdays & Fridays: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Weekends: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Balloon Hours
Thursdays & Fridays: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM; 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Weekends: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM; 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Registration to fly in the evenings begins at 6:00 pm, with limited availability (first-come, first-serve basis). All flights are dependent on winds and weather conditions. Please call the Visitors Center toll-free at 1 (866) 829-3829 for more information and to check on flight conditions before visiting.
